Working Life of Income Insufficient for UK Labor Force to Enter Richest 10%, Analysis Says

According to fresh study, the average earner in the UK would require over five decades of salary to attain the wealth level of the richest 10% of the population.

Widening Wealth Gap Over Time

The analysis examined wealth distribution data from the 2020-22 timeframe and determined that during the mid-2000s, it would have required 38 years' worth of average worker salary to reach the top 10th of the financial hierarchy.

A senior economist involved with the study commented: "Economic disparities in Britain are currently so significant that a regular employee setting aside their entire income during their working years would continue to be incapable to attain the highest level of the economic scale."

Quantifying the Economic Gap

The study found that the difference between the net worth of the median citizen and someone in the wealthiest decile was one million pounds in the pre-crisis period, but had increased to £1.3 million in inflation-adjusted terms by 2020-22.

The researcher continued: "These gaps are especially alarming as economic movement in Britain is limited – people that start life wealthy tend to remain affluent, and the opposite holds true."

Comparative Financial Divide

Even with the economic divide growing in specific figures, the portion of overall assets in the UK owned by the most affluent homes – known as "proportional economic disparity" – has been "mostly consistent since the 1980s," as stated in the study.

During this period, overall assets in the UK increased dramatically from triple the annual GDP, to almost 7.5 times.

Factors of Economic Disparity

Referred to as "passive" appreciation, via growing real estate costs and adjustments to retirement fund assessments, were the key contributors of the widening wealth gap since 2010, according to the study.

These gains tended to accrue to older, property-owning households, the study demonstrates – worsening the generational financial disparity.

Age-Based Economic Gaps

The median economic difference between individuals aged 30-34 and sixty-somethings grew by more than 100% in actual value, from 135 thousand pounds in the mid-2000s, to £310,000.

Geographic Disparities

Additionally, there were stark geographic differences, with the typical amount of net worth in 2020-22 amounting to £290,000 in the southeastern region, where housing costs have tended to rise rapidly, as opposed to 110 thousand pounds in the NE of England.

Pandemic Period Effects

Amid the health crisis, when millions of workers were supported by the government-supported job retention program, and health crisis restrictions limited opportunities for spending, the statistics indicate countless homes were capable of accumulating, increasing their wealth.

Higher-income households fared much better, nevertheless. "The average household in the bottom income bracket saw their cash reserves grow by only eighty pounds over the pandemic period (from 2019 to 2022), approximately equivalent to the pre-crisis period. On the other hand, the typical family in the wealthiest fifth saw their available funds grow by 4,200 pounds," the study reveals.
