Tuchel Questions Home Fan Atmosphere Despite Emphatic Win Over Wales.
The England head coach expressed his regret that the England team did not enjoy more encouragement from the Wembley crowd during their impressive triumph over Wales on Thursday evening.
The manager was satisfied to see his side continue their good form, with finishes from Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the initial stages settling the game. But, he was not content with the energy at the iconic venue.
“With one and a half training days to prepare against a drilled team and we did very well,” Tuchel commented. “It could have been five goals ahead at half-time. We missed the additional goals. There was little noise. There was no support back from the stands. Our team gave their all to win.”
“What more can you provide in 20 minutes? We prevented them get away. If you hear just the Welsh supporters for half an hour, it’s sad because the team earned more support today.”
“I maintain my words. There’s nothing more than leading three goals up in a rivalry match. I would have wished for a bit more backing in periods where it becomes tough.”
“After halftime, to cheer us on, there was a bit too much support for Wales. It could have helped us to recharge, but that’s football and that is it.”
Squad Decisions Vindicated by Performance
Away from risking a dispute among fans, Tuchel also caused a stir by leaving out Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden from his team selection. But the decision was backed up by Morgan Rogers impressing again in the attacking midfield role and scoring his first international goal.
“He is what he is,” the head coach explained. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is fighting for his spot.”
Wales Manager Hopes for Lessons from Defeat
The Wales manager expressed hope that Wales, who face Belgium in a crucial World Cup qualifier on next week, improve after their disappointing performance in the opening period.
“That’s the reason I scheduled this friendly,” Bellamy commented. “I wanted to assess our standing. What are our ambitions? What is our identity? This performance fills me with drive.”
Injury Concern for Striker
Watkins was substituted at half-time after clattering into a post and may miss out when England play Latvia in Riga in a qualifier on next week.
