Tropical Cyclone Matmo Hit Coastal China Bringing Massive Relocations
The powerful storm made landfall on the southern shores of China on the weekend, shortly after sweeping across the provincial island of Hainan. The intense weather forced the relocation of around 350,000 people, bringing torrential rain and damaging winds, especially between Wuchuan in Guangdong and Hainan's Wenchang. Boat transport were suspended and flights cancelled at the airport in Haikou.
Typhoon Statistics
The typhoon, the 21st cyclone of 2025, recorded wind speeds of 151km/h and poured more than 50mm of precipitation in a short period in Qinzhou and Chongzou. Urban areas of the region also experienced high rainfall totals.
The storm triggered China's highest-level emergency warning, with disturbances in the city, where businesses, transportation systems and highways were shut. In Hong Kong, numerous air services were affected and 30 cancelled.
Forecast and Movement
As the typhoon moves inland towards the provincial area in Vietnam, it is projected to weaken into a tropical depression with 55mph winds but will persist to bring substantial precipitation. Vietnam's northern regions could experience significant rainfall on Monday, raising the risk of inundation and landslides. The weather pattern is expected to move towards Yunnan province in China, where further intense rain is likely.
Other Storm Systems
At the same time, a hurricane named Priscilla formed off the Pacific shoreline of Mexico on the weekend, first as a storm system. It prompted a weather alert for the southwestern areas from Punta San Telmo to Punta Mita on the start of the week.
In the morning of Sunday, the hurricane was about 491 kilometers from a Mexican cape with sustained winds of 65mph. It strengthened into a hurricane in the evening, when sustained winds reached at 75mph.
Though not expected to hit the coast, Priscilla is likely to generate dangerous waves and rip currents as it tracks north-west along the coast towards Baja California Sur. Substantial rain is forecast on the coming day, amounting to a considerable volume in specific Mexican states, with local totals at about 20 centimeters. Colima and western Jalisco could receive 50-100mm.
Elsewhere, Cyclone Shakhti has formed as the first post-monsoon cyclonic storm of the year in the a body of water, prompting an warning from the India Meteorological Department for Maharashtra. On Sunday, the cyclone was 209 kilometers southeast of a location in Oman with maximum sustained winds of 64mph.
The storm, which has moved in a southwestern direction and weakened, is forecast to recurve towards the east into the Arabian Sea. Rough seas are expected to continue along the coastal stretch and intense rain is anticipated in shoreline areas including Dwarka, Jamnagar and Surat.
