Mikel Arteta feels assured that his side can persist in handling with fitness issues following disclosing that star striker Kai Havertz remains out for the coming weeks.

Extended Absence for Havertz

The Germany international has been out since the summer after undergoing an operation on his knee. Initially expected to come back earlier in December, Arteta explained the player hit a snag when increasing his training and could not progress “the next phase.”

“Our experience helped us build a squad that is much more reliable and has more options,” Arteta said.

Tactical Decisions for Midweek Fixture

This news leaves a tactical puzzle for Wednesday’s home game against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between sticking with Mikel Merino, who scored as a makeshift striker last weekend, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly from a muscle injury off the bench. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is an option post-recovery.

Fitness Doubts Linger

Additional concerns surround defender William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the weekend encounter. Consequently, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to keep their places in the heart of the defence for the Premier League front-runners.

The manager is convinced the £250m spend on reinforcements ahead of this season has placed the club in a far better place to navigate such setbacks.

Greater Options Key to Premier League Pursuit

In response if a larger pool of players was benefiting their league challenge, Arteta was emphatic. “Indeed, since the current term has seen more issues in the attacking line, and now the problems with the backline,” he continued.

“History has shown us that we need to utilize players in various roles, and they need to be prepared to perform various functions if we are to fight at this level. And the instance of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”

Manager’s Sympathy for Suffering Havertz

Speaking about the delay highlighted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered more insight. “He followed all protocols. He failed to advance to the next level and now it’s looking like we have solved that issue.”

The manager conveyed his eagerness to have him back. “Everyone is eager to have him. Truly, Havertz is someone that, in my view, I love so much for his contributions to the team, but his personality, his attitude. I watch him struggle on the sidelines.”
