“It appears somewhat mystical,” notes a Durham University professor, a scientist who has studied phototherapy extensively. Certainly, some of light’s effects on our bodies are well established. Sunlight enables vitamin D production, needed for bone health, immunity, muscles and more. Sunlight regulates our circadian rhythms, too, activating brain chemicals and hormonal responses in daylight, and signaling the body to slow down for nighttime. Artificial sun lamps are standard treatment for winter mood disorders to elevate spirits during colder months. So there’s no doubt we need light energy to function well.

While Sad lamps tend to use a mixture of light frequencies from the blue end of the spectrum, most other light therapy devices deploy red or infrared light.
