Educator Slain and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Firefight at Educational Institution in Nigeria
Weapon-carrying attackers have fatally shot an educator and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an raid targeting a female high school in north-western Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.
The criminal group invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on Monday, authorities reported.
The assailants "engaged police personnel on duty in a firefight" before climbing over the boundary wall and seizing the students from their living quarters, according to a statement.
One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now receiving treatment.
Observers recounted a large group of attackers, referred to locally as criminal elements, who came shooting randomly to cause panic.
Community members told reporters that the gunmen subsequently marched a number of girls into surrounding rural areas.
The police said they had deployed "supplementary tactical squads, together with army members and vigilante groups" to the area.
